5 Videos That Celebrate GirlPower

on
Women represent around half of the world’s population, and while disparities in equality still exist, there are enormous strides being made to guarantee that girls and women are afforded the same opportunities as men.

To feel the spirit of girl power, check out these 5 selected videos.

1. Dance
One six-year old girl took a breakdancing competition by storm with her incredible moves and punchy attitude. Competing against boys twice her age, the young B-girl Terra showed that nothing can hold her back.

2. Business
Sheryl Sandberg is not only the COO of Facebook, she is a vocal advocate for women empowerment. Sandberg wrote the book Lean In which discusses how women can fulfill their potential and take the lead. She later launched the nonprofit Lean In that is considered ‘the next chapter’ of her book, and serves as a platform to connect and inspire women. The world that Sandberg envisions is one that we can all relate to; a place where everyone has opportunities based on their passions and interests, regardless of gender.

3. Play
Engineering is a typically male dominated field, in fact only 11% of engineers are women. That statistic did not sit well with Debbie Sterling, so the Stanford University alum decided to fix the situation. She created GoldieBlox –  a toy and book series featuring the child inventor Goldie – a jack of all trades who loves to build. This sweet video shows a stampede of eager girls rocking shirts emblazoned with the slogan “More than a Princess” – eager  to unleash their inner builder, inventor and engineer.

4. Leaders
Makers is a multi-faceted digital platform that showcases thousands of incredible stories from trailblazing women of the past and present.  The online library of motivating stories is the perfect place to derive inspiration and girl power.  In February 2013 Makers produced a three-hour documentary that recounted the history of the feminist movement via firsthand accounts from such notables as Gloria Steinem and Hillary Clinton.
